I met my next model (August) today. Originally this dress was supposed to be red but now it`s blue. How it happened? Well it`s a long story.. Now we go with the blue. I still have eight days to finish my 8th dress.

Tapasin tänään elokuun mekon mallin vihdoin ja viimein. Mekosta piti tulla alunperin punainen, mutta nyt siitä tuleekin sininen. Onneksi mulla on vielä kahdeksan päivää aikaa saada tämä kahdeksas mekko valmiiksi.

My dresses

We’re already halfway through August and I still haven’t met my model of this month. Despite all this I’ve had to start making the dress anyhow, so I’m really looking forward to the fitting sessions next Thursday and how everything will turn out.

I realized once again that my dream is already so far that I only have five dresses left. There are still so many things I’d like to learn and try. Here’s a little summary of all the finished dresses and their successes and failures.

Rebel Rio: + I sewed the first zipper of my life to a dress.

July`s dress story vol.1 / Heinäkuun mekon tarina vol.1

Help!

So much has happened in July that I have to split the events into two stories. So, here’s the first part of the story of the seventh dress, with photos and all.

What do you get when you mix sun, smiles, kisses, sand, waves, chilling out, holiday, playing guitar by the evening fire, festivals, good music, a wedding, dancing and hugs? You get the world’s sweetest cocktail called the Summer of Love 2011.

This has truly been one summer of love. I got the idea of the dress when I heard that my friends were getting married this summer and in July at that.  

I encouraged myself to play with the idea of making a wedding dress. The thought of making a huge traditional cake dress was not an option because of its impossibility. I wouldn’t have had any motivation to even try making one. I really wanted to have time to go on a holiday this summer, but I also wanted to make some sort of wedding dress nonetheless.

What would be a good wedding dress, then – and possible to make in a month, too? Long, short, shimmering or as simple as possible?

I decided to make a dress that would suit this particular summer and my holiday trip. I wanted to make a dress where you would feel relaxed and you could dance the night away. The final theme turned out to be a wedding on the beach. Cheesy enough? YEP!

Finding a model in July was a bit tricky as I had decided to take a holiday and travel. In the end the only possible option was to make the dress for myself. Felt like a second chance to wear a wedding dress.

I have yet not been able to make a good dress for myself that would stay put on me. Apparently I still couldn’t, but at least I sewed the first invisible zipper of my life. The result was quite crappy and a bit too visible. So, not a proper invisible zipper but a good attempt nonetheless!

The top of the dress was too big despite my zipper attempts, but apart from that the dress worked out pretty painlessly. I even glued buckram to the top so that the shape of the dress would stay fit also without straps. A hint: it’s a good idea to check which side of the fabric you start to glue. Detaching the buckram from the ironing board isn’t necessarily a fast and fluent process.

I have several summer songs that get me in the best summer mood. I saw a whole new side of one of these songs when I was in Thailand on the island of Raya in July. The song is called Island Girl, by Don Johnson Big Band. The lyrics of the song were so on the dot on the island of Raya. Thank you Kari, Tommy, Johannes and Pekka, you make amazingly good music.

The dress of July was shot also on the mentioned island of Raya. Unfortunately my regular photographer Risto Kuulasmaa couldn’t make it to the photo shoots location because of my limited photo shoot budget. Hence Juhani Perkiö, a member of my travel posse, took the photos. The quality of the photos isn’t the same as that of the previous photos but let’s blame it on the holiday, too. On the grounds of the finished photos I’ve decided to leave modelling jobs to my friends and stay put behind the sewing machine from now on.

I will soon present to you my latest dress that is called E&J. To get to the right mood I recommend listening to the previously mentioned song Island Girl as background music. The dress is not perfect and it isn’t meant to be. In life things are hardly ever perfect, but luckily there are times in life when everything feels as such.

Apua!

Heinäkuussa on tapahtunut niin paljon, että joudun jakamaan tapahtumat kahteen eri tarinaan. Tässä siis seitsemännen mekkoni tarinasta ensimmäinen osa kuvineen päivineen.

Mitä tulee kun sekoitetaan aurinkoa, hymyjä, pusuja, hiekkaa, aaltoja, rentoa menoa, loma, kitaransoittoa iltanuotiolla, festareita, hyvää musaa, häät, tanssia ja halauksia? Siitä tulee tietenkin maailman suloisin cocktail nimeltään: Summer of Love 2011.

Tämä on todellakin ollut yksi rakkauden kesä. Heinäkuun mekon idea syntyi kun kuulin, että ystäväni menisivät naimisiin tänä kesänä ja vieläpä heinäkuussa.

Rohkaisin itseni leikkimään ajatuksella hääpuvun tekemisestä. Ajatus valtavan perinteisen ”kermaleivoksen” tekemisestä kaatui toki heti jo omaan mahdottomuuteensa. Eikä minulla olisi kyllä ollut mitään motivaatiota alkaa edes kokeilemaan sellaisen tekemistä. Halusin ehtiä oikeasti lomailemaan tänä kesänä, mutta jonkinlaisen hääpuvun halusin kuitenkin tehdä.

Mikä sitten olisi hyvä hääpuku, ja vielä mahdollista toteuttaa itse kuukaudessa? Pitkä, lyhyt,  kimalteleva vai mahdollisimman yksinkertainen? 

Heinäkuulle mallin löytäminen oli hieman hankalaa, sillä olin päättänyt pitää lomaa ja matkustella.  Ainoaksi vaihtoehdoksi jäi oikeastaan valmistaa mekko itselleni. Ah, ihan kuin saisin toisen mahdollisuuden pitää ylläni hääpukua. 

En ole tehnyt vielä koskaan itselleni hyvää mekkoa, joka kestäisi päällä kunnolla. Enkä kyllä osannut vieläkään tehdä sellaista, mutta ompelin mekkoon sentään elämäni ensimmäisen piilovetoketjun. Lopputulos oli melkoisen surkea ja näkyvä. Ei siis varsinaisesti mikään piilovetoketju, mutta yritys hyvä kymmenen.

Päätin toteuttaa sellaisen puvun, joka sopisi juuri tähän kesään ja lomamatkaani. Halusin tehdä puvun, jossa olisi rento olla, ja siinä olisi mahdollista jorailla aamun asti. Lopulliseksi teemaksi muodostui häät rannalla. Onko tarpeeksi siirappista? ON!!!

Mekon yläosa jäi liian suureksi vetoketjuviritelmästä huolimatta, mutta muuten mekko onnistui melko kivuttomasti. Liimasin jopa kovikekangasta yläosaan, jotta mekon muoto pysyisi hyvänä ilman olkaimia. Vinkiksi muille: kannattaa katsoa aika tarkkaan kumpaa puolta lähtee kovikekankaasta liimailemaan. Kovikekankaan irrottaminen silityslaudasta ei suju välttämättä ihan sekunnissa.

Minulla on monta kesäkappaletta, joita kuuntelemalla tulee paras kesäfiilis. Yksi näistä kesäkappaleista kieltämättä avautui minulle ihan uudella tavalla ollessani heinäkuussa Thaimaassa Rayan saarella. Kappale on nimeltään Island Girl, ja se on Don Johnson Big Bandin käsialaa. Tuon biisin sanat osuivat niin kohdalleen Rayan saarella, että ah. Kiitos Kari, Tommy, Johannes ja Pekka, te teette yksinkertaisesti mielettömän hyvää musaa.

Heinäkuun mekko kuvattiin myös kyseisellä Rayan saarella. Valitettavasti rakas vakiovalokuvaajani Risto Kuulasmaa ei päässyt tulemaan samaan kuvauslokatioon heikon kuvausbudjettini vuoksi. Tämän vuoksi kuvat otti matkaseurueeseeni kuulunut Juhani Perkiö. Kuvien laatu ei ole ihan samaa tasoa kuin aikaisempien mekkokuvien, mutta menköön tämäkin loman piikkiin. Valmistuneiden mekkokuvien perusteella olen päättänyt suosiolla jättää mallin hommat ystävilleni, ja pysytellä jatkossakin visusti ompelukoneen takana.   

Esittelen teille pian uusimman mekkoni, joka kantaa nimeä E&J. Päästäksenne oikeaan tunnelmaan suosittelen laittamaan taustalle soimaan edellä mainitsemani biisin Island Girl. Mekko ei todellakaan ole täydellinen, eikä sen ole tarkoituskaan olla. Elämässä harvemmin mikään on täydellistä, mutta onneksi elämässä on silloin tällöin hetkiä jolloin kaikki tuntuu täydelliseltä.

Greetings from Thailand my 7th dress is almost ready! Terkkuja Thaimaasta! Seitsemäs mekko alkaa olemaan valmis. Fiilikset ovat hyvät!

I am on holiday but I took my 7th dress with me to Thailand and It´s almost ready. I think you´ll enjoy the story behind it. / Loma on alkanut, mutta otin seitsemännen mekon matkaani mukaan Thaimaaseen. Tarina mekon takana on ihanaa hömppää, ah! loving it!

6/12! Unelmani puoliväli ja ansaittu kesäloma!

What a feeling!!! During this year I’ve made six unique dresses and I’m halfway through my dream. This is a good point to start my month-long holiday, but I promise to make the dress of July nonetheless, somehow on the side of my holiday.

But now, to the story of the dress of June.

I read an article from Olivia magazine of January 2011 (“The hardest thing is the constant secrecy”, roughly translated) that told the story of a prisoner’s wife. The article was written from the viewpoint of the prisoner’s close relative and how life had changed when the father of the family is suddenly behind bars. It was an exceptional story as usually the focus of such articles is on interviewing the relatives of the victim. Few come to think that also the killer might have a home and a loving family.

I played with the thought for a long time: could I make a dress that would be like a small story of the article I’d read? The wife of the prisoner described her feelings as anxious. However, I didn’t want to make the dress too depressing. Thus for my starting point I chose the idea of a prisoner’s wife who is physically free to enjoy her life even though she might not be able to do so mentally.

Already at the beginning of May I realized I would have to finish the dress of June well ahead of schedule in order to have a summer holiday. In real life this meant finishing the dress exceptionally fast.

In the fitting sessions I built the dress straight on the model. This time, though, I began the process right away with the lining fabric. I can’t recommend this tactic: I had to buy more lining fabric twice. It’s way cheaper to make experiments and mistakes with disposable tablecloth. Phew!

The fitting sessions went alright, but the actual dress fabric turned out to be a really bad choice. I’m talking about liquid satin – well, the name says it all already. The fabric was very slippery and the skills of an amateur dressmaker like me weren’t enough to master such challenging fabric.

I dreamed of making a big long braid to the dress and I wanted to use leather for it. I just hadn’t found good leather from any of the fabric shops I usually use (Eurokangas, Villisilkki, Kangasmakasiini etc…) Luckily I spoke up about the matter when we were visiting my parents-in-law in Seinäjoki. As their hobby is motorcycling, we immediately found four pairs of leather pants from their closets. These provided me with enough leather. Hurrah recycling! By the way, if anyone is on the lookout for the hottest piece of clothing of the summer, leather shorts, we have ‘em. Feel free to come and get your own, for free! 

The beautiful leather braid ended up looking something else in the photo shoots, which irritates the hell out of me, but time ran out and I couldn’t test the idea adequately in practice. By the way, if you like leather and leather accessories, the shop gTIE is worth checking out. Jenni has some super cool stuff in her shop.

I borrowed once a male model for the fittings. 

The model for the dress of June was a beauty called Manuela. She’s the tallest of the models I’ve used so far (172 cm). During this month I decided that from now on, I’ll be using models who are under 175 cm tall. Or else I’ll have to get myself a stool to stand on for the fitting sessions.

I was excited about the photo shoots location, as we went to Suomenlinna that has a working open prison. Hence the story of the dress felt real at the location. Our day of photo shoots ended with a picnic, a cheerful mood and a spectacular sunset.

This dress ain’t perfect and it has a lot of mistakes. For instance, it lacks the (in)famous zipper. This dress proves that I truly am not a professional but an amateur dressmaker that still has a lot to learn. Luckily I have six more dresses to go, so that I can make progress and do things a bit better than before.

However, now it’s time to focus on dress choices of my own: next week I’ll be attending my friend’s wedding. Summer of Love 2011, here we come!

Voi elämä miten mahtava olo!!! Olen valmistanut tämän vuoden aikana kuusi mekkoa, ja olen unelmani puolessa välissä. Osa mekoista on onnistunut niin, etten usko edes itse tehneeni niitä. Osa mekoista on kuitenkin osoittanut sen, että asiat olisivat voineet mennä paremminkin. Tästä on kuitenkin hyvä aloittaa kuukauden mittainen loma, mutta heinäkuun mekon lupaan kuitenkin tehdä totta kai. Itse asiassa se on jo ihan hyvällä mallillla.

Mutta nyt siis kesäkuun mekon tarinan ja kuvien pariin.

Luin tammikuussa 2011 ilmestyneestä Olivia-lehdestä artikkelin (”Raskainta on jatkuva salailu”), joka kertoi tarinan vangin vaimosta. Juttu oli siis kirjoitettu vangin lähiomaisen näkökulmasta, ja siitä kuinka elämä oli muuttunut, kun perheenisä istuukin yhtäkkiä linnassa. Juttu oli poikkeuksellinen, sillä yleensähän jutuissa on haastateltu uhrin omaisia. Harva meistä tulee ajatelleeksi sitä, että tappajallakin voisi olla koti ja rakastava perhe. 

Pyörittelin pitkään ajatusta: Voisinko tehdä mekon, joka olisi pieni kertomus lukemastani jutusta? Vangin vaimo kuvaili oloaan ahdistuneeksi. En halunnut tehdä mekosta kuitenkaan liian synkkää. Siksipä päätinkin leikitellä ajatuksella vangin vaimosta, joka on fyysisesti vapaa nauttimaan elämästään vaikka ei henkisesti siihen kykenisikään.

Tajusin jo toukokuun alussa, että kesäkuun mekko olisi saatava hyvissä ajoin valmiiksi, että voisin pitää kesälomaa. Käytännössä tämä tarkoitti sitä, että minun oli tehtävä kesäkuun mekko valmiiksi poikkeuksellisen nopeasti. Varasin siis aikaa mekolle konkreettisesti noin kaksi viikkoa. HUONO IDEA!!!

Rakensin sovituksissa mekon mallin päälle suoraan. Tosin tällä kertaa aloitin tekemisen suoraan vuorikankaan avulla. En suosittele tätä toimintamallia muille amatööreille, sillä jouduin hakemaan vuorikangasta lisää kaupasta kaksi kertaa. Kertakäyttöpöytäliinaan on edullisempaa tehdä virheitä ja kokeiluja. Huoh!

Tässä vaiheessa homma oli vielä ihan hyvällä mallilla, mutta sitten nuppineulat purkaantuivat pukupussissa...

Sovitukset menivät ihan hyvin, mutta varsinainen mekkokangas osoittautui todella huonoksi valinnaksi. Tarkoitan liquid satiinia, jonka nimikin kertoo jo paljon. Kangas liukui koko ajan, ja tällaisen amatööriompelijan taidot eivät riittäneet käsittelemään haastavaa kangasta. Virheet näkyvät lopputuloksessa.  

Haaveilin tekeväni mekkoon paksun ja pitkän letin, johon tahdoin käyttää nahkaa. En vain ollut löytänyt hyvää nahkaa mistään yleisimmin käyttämistäni kangaskaupoista (Eurokangas, Villisilkki - no täältä ei ainakaan, Kangasmakasiini ym…). Onneksi kuitenkin tajusin avata suuni, kun olimme Seinäjoella appivanhempieni luona. Moottoripyöräilyä harrastavien ihmisten kaapeista löytyi heti neljät vanhat nahkahousut, joista sain käyttööni tarvittavan määrän nahkaa. Kierrätys kunniaan! Muuten jos joku kaipaa kesän kuuminta hottiskamaa eli nahkashortseja niin täältä löytyy. Saa tulla hakemaan pois, ja ihan ilmaiseksi :)

Muuten tuo kaunis nahkaletti ei sitten näyttänyt tuolta kuvauksissa, mikä harmittaa ihan pirusti mutta aika loppui tällä kertaa kesken enkä ehtinyt kokeilemaan ideaani tarpeeksi käytännössä. (Muuten, jos joku tykkää nahkasta ja nahkasta tehdystä asusteista kannattaa tsekata gTIE-niminen liike. Jennillä on ihan superhienoja juttuja liikkeessään).

Kesäkuun mekon mallina toimi Manuela-niminen kaunotar. Manuela on pisin tähän asti käyttämistäni malleista (172 cm). Päätin tämän kuukauden aikana, että käytän jatkossa maksimissaan 175 cm mittaisia malleja. Tai muuten joudun hankkimaan lastenjakkaran korokkeeksi itselleni sovituksia varten.

Käytin myös kerran hätäpäissäni erästä  kylässä ollutta miestä sovitusnukkena. Tämä mies oli vielä pidempi kuin mallini. 

Olin innoissani kuvauspaikasta, sillä menimme ottamaan kuvat Suomenlinnaan. Suomenlinnassa on toiminnassa oleva avovankila, joten mekon tarina tuntui todelta kuvauspaikalla. Kuvauspäivämme huipentui piknikkiin, (erityisesti minun) hilpeään olotilaan ja upeaan auringonlaskuun. Kiitos Risto ja Manuela, että jaksoitte laadukkaita juttujani.

Tämä mekko ei ole täydellinen, ja siinä on paljon virheitä. Siitä puuttuu muun muassa kuuluisa vetoketju. Tämä mekko todistaa sen, etten todellakaan ole ammattilainen vaan amatööriompelija, jolla on vielä paljon opittavaa. Onneksi minulla on vielä kuusi mekkoa luotavana, jotta voin kehittyä ja tehdä asioita ehkä hieman paremmin kuin ennen. Jään odottamaan teidän kommenttejanne mekosta ja kuvista.

Mutta nyt täytyy alkaa miettimään omia mekkovalintoja, sillä ensi viikolla suuntaan ystäväni häihin. Rakkauden kesä 2011 here we come!
