After the wedding dresses.../Hääpukujen jälkeen...

My friend came over me on monday eve and she was having dress problems. She even brought me a beautiful polyester fabric and because I needed a color bath after the wedding dresses I said: Let´s do this. I hope we can share this dress after it´s done./ Ystäväni pistäytyi luonani maanantaina, ja hänellä oli mekko-ongelmia. Hän toi jopa kauniin polyesteri kankaan mukanaan. Hääpukujen jälkeen olin  värikylvyn tarpeessa, joten olin ideassa nopeasti mukana. Toiveena mulla on jakaa tämä mekko ystävni kanssa, kunhan saadaan se valmiiksi.

It´s easy to do foldings from polyester fabric.  On the other hand the fabric is really slippery and difficult to sew./ Polyesteristä on helppoa tehdä laskoksia, mutta toisaalta kangas on todella liukasta ja vaikeaa ommella.

With this doll it´s easy to try different kinds of things/ Tämän nuken avulla on kyllä mahtavaa kokeilla erilaisia juttuja.

Polyester fabric isn´t that popular in wedding dresses. The most "traditional" fabrics are silk, lace, satin, taffeta... But I found nice creamy color polyester fabric from Eurokangas and I decided to make a wedding dress out of it. You´ll see the result when I get the pictures from my wedding dresses. / Polyesteri kangas ei taida olla niin suosittua hääpuvuissa. "Perinteisimmät" kankaat ovat silkki, satiini, pitsi ja tafti... Mutta löysin ihanan kermanvärisen polyesteri kankaan Eurokankaasta, ja päätin tehdä siitä hääpuvun. Näette lopputuloksen kunhan saan kuvat hääpuvuistani.

A ship to Scotland? / Laivalla Skotlantiin?

That country I’ve visited many times since my childhood has offered me with a lot of adventures, memories, friends and experiences. I’ve often travelled there alone and done things by myself. Those trips have been a wonderful opportunity for me to practice the noble art of being by myself.

The main theme of the dress is Scotland. Many would take it for granted that I’d make a traditional kilt but a kilt is not a dress.

Already in spring I had this weird idea of a pinafore dress–culottes that would in other words be a combination of a kilt, shorts and a vest. To make such an article would however require a lot of knowledge on tailoring that I of course don’t have. Well…

We bought an apartment at the end of the summer and decided to move there in September. As I packed I realized once again how much redundant stuff we’ve kept for all these years. Could these still be used, what if someone needs this or can I throw this away? I let the idea grow and in the end decided to make the dress of September from second-hand materials = to make the dress from old clothes.

I found a gorgeous leather jacket at the bottom of a leather clothes’ bag dragged home from my in-laws in the summer. My husband put it on and announced he’d start wearing it this instant. I agreed to a compromise, where I’d get the sleeves separable from the jacket with zippers. I made the top from the sleeves. Material was scarce but at least the colour was perfect.  

I found two velvet pants of the same colour that provided me with enough fabric for the lower part. I asked for unwanted leather belts, buckles etc. from my friends, bits and pieces that would go with my dress. Finally I had all the material and I had used money only for buttons and thread.

First I made a shorts leg and beside that there should have been another half resembling a kilt. The leg looked and apparently felt very weird. Thus I gave up my genius idea (lacking the tailoring skills needed), and cut the other leg short. 

The photographer Risto Kuulasmaa had asked a friend of his to model and we only had time to do one fitting with him. That fitting session was hilarious. The situation was also exceptional in many ways as it was done in the bar Corona. This model accepted a huge challenge and did better than I could ever have hoped for. THANK YOU, J!

The delay of the dress of August till September and the changes in my life kept me busy. Hence it’s a small miracle that the dress of September was finished in time, even one day early.

This time the dress was photographed on the sailboat Svanhild at the pier in Helsinki. Thank you very much for letting us use the ship as a photo shoots location. Thank you also Paula for everything!

Thank you Puppa for helping me and throwing yourself into this adventure. You are by far the most handsome model of this dream!

Photographer Risto Kuulasmaa is back! It was great working with you again. My favourite pics so far are definitely among these photos. Breathtaking, real and most of all, they came out mind-blowingly well.

Valmistin ensiksi shortisin lahkeen, ja sen rinnalle piti tulla kilttiä muistuttavaa helmaa. "Lahje" näytti ja tuntui kuitenkin kuulemma niin oudolta, että leikkasin sen sittenkin lyhyeksi.

Tuo maa jossa olen käynyt pienestä pitäen on tarjonnut minulle lukuisia seikkailuja, muistoja, ystäviä ja kokemuksia. Olen matkustanut maahan monesti yksin, ja tehnyt asioita omin päin. Nuo reissut ovat olleet minulle mahtavia tilaisuuksia harjoitella yksin olemisen jaloa taitoa.

Mekon kantavana teemana toimi siis Skotlanti. Moni voisi pitää itsestäänselvyytenä sitä, että olen valmistanut perinteitä kunnioittavan kiltin, mutta kiltti ei ole mekko.

Sain jo keväällä päähäni oudon idean liivihousuhamemekosta, joka olisi siis kiltin, shortsien ja liivin yhdistelmämekko. Tällaisen kokonaisuuden valmistaminen vaatisi kuitenkin jo ymmärrystä räätälöinnistä, jota minulla ei tietenkään ole. No….

Ostimme kesän lopuksi asunnon, ja päätimme muuttaa uuteen kotiin syyskuussa. Pakkaillessani muuttolaatikoita tajusin jälleen kerran kuinka paljon kaikkea turhaa tavaraa olemmekaan säilyttäneet vuosien ajan. Voisiko näitä käyttää vielä, tarvitseekohan joku tätä vai voiko tämän heittää roskiin?  Kypsyttelin hiukan ideaa, ja päätin toteuttaa syyskuun mekon kierrätysmateriaaleista = tekemällä vanhoista vaatteista uuden mekon.

Kesällä anoppilasta kotiin raahatun nahkavaatesäkin pohjalta löytyi ihana ruskea nahkatakki. Mieheni tempaisi takin päälleen ja ilmoitti ottavansa sen käyttöön. Suostuin tekemään kompromissin, jossa minulle takista jäi vetoketjuilla irtoavat hihat. Valmistin hihoista mekon yläosan. Materiaalia oli varsin vähän, mutta väri sentään oli täydellinen.

Alaosaan löysin kahdet samanväriset sammarit, joista riitti tarpeeksi kangasta alaosaa varten. Pyysin ystäviltäni tarpeettomia nahkavöitä, solkia ym.. sälää joka soveltuisi mekkooni. Materiaalit olivat siis kasassa, ja rahaa oli kulunut oikeastaan vain lankaan ja nappeihin.

Valokuvaaja Risto Kuulasmaa oli pyytänyt puolestani malliksi erästä ystäväänsä, jonka kanssa ehdimme tekemään vain yhdet sovitukset. Noista sovituksista ei puuttunut huumoria. Sovitustilanne oli muutenkin miten sanoisin poikkeuksellinen, joka toteutettiin Corona-baarissa. Sanon vaan jo nyt, että tämä malli otti kyllä ison haasteen vastaan, ja hoiti sen paremmin kuin osasin edes toivoa. KIITOS J!

Elokuun mekon viivästyminen syyskuun puolelle sekä omassa elämässä tapahtuvat muutokset pitivät minut kiireisinä. On siis pieni ihme, että syyskuun mekko valmistui ajallaan ja vieläpä päivän etuajassa.

Mekko kuvattiin tällä kertaa Helsingin halkolaiturilla sijaitsevalla puisella purjelaiva Svanhildillä. Kiitos tuhannesti että saimme käyttää laivaa kuvauspaikkana. Haaveilen jo mielessäni tekeväni ensi kesänä pienen meriseikkailun Svanhildillä. Pääsisköhän sillä ihan Skotlantiin asti? :)

Risto Kuulasmaa is back! Oli mahtavaa tehdä taas töitä kanssasi. Näistä kuvista löytyy ehdottomasti kaksi suosikkikuvaani kaikista tähän asti otetuista kuvista. Huikeita, aitoja ja ennen kaikkea ihan mielettömän onnistuneita.

Blue riding hood of August/ Elokuinen sinihilkka

August began and we returned home from holiday. For once a true holiday where I even forgot what day or time it was. Wonderful HOLIDAY! Perhaps just because of this, after I got home, everyday life hit me hard. My dear husband went back to work. It was time for me to continue my journey with my dream.

For the first week, I stared at my Brother-sewing machine and turned my gaze. My motivation was totally lost. All the fun ideas I had while on holiday waited to be put into practice, but starting the process felt overbearingly difficult. We continued our staring contest every evening until...

Panic attacked. August was almost halfway, and I had barely done anything useful. I pulled myself together, called the model and we set the first fitting date. I went to the fabric store. I'd decided to make a red dress. The idea for that was born of August, the beginning of schools and my friend's earlier comment: ”every woman should have at least one red dress”. I played around with the thought of Red riding hood that would combine both the school world and a red dress. 

The problems continued in the fabric store. I couldn't find any good fabric that would help me carry out my plans. I bought a red cotton fabric, nonetheless, that turned out to be a very poor choice once I got home. The fabric wrinkled the whole time and its colour was mostly close to orange in a certain light. Well...

I cut the top out of the ”red” fabric with feeling and did some – in my opinion – fun folds to it. I decided to sew the top somehow so we would have something ”ready” at the first fittings. A VERY BAD IDEA!!! The top turned out to be so small that there was no way my model would fit in it. A somewhat familiar situation straight from March...

At this point I hated the fabric so much that I gave up and decided to change the whole theme of the dress of August. It must have been first time during this year that I end up doing like this. In my opinion this was a good idea as it seemed that there were Red riding hoods everywhere already. In August the movie Red Riding Hood premiered and Sarah Jessica Parker made an appearance at her new movie's I don't know how she does it premiere wearing a Red riding hood -type of dress. The fabric is now in a closet waiting for a new model (a child) and a new inspiration.

So, I was at square one and it was maybe the 19th of August. I thought about what I personally like about August, and the top list was: the cool evenings of August, dreaming, sunsets, parks, the beach of a lake and the starry sky. That was it. Bring on a new fabric and let's get back to work.

First I made a huge hood out of the fabric. This time I'd made sure my model would fit in the dress. To be honest, even two models wouldn't have had any trouble fitting in the dress. That's how huge the dress was when I took it to the first fittings. We joked with my model, whether this one should actually be a pregnancy dress. In the fitting sessions I made some folds directly on the model.

The dress lay around my sewing table (aka kitchen table) and I had a hard time finding the key idea. The back and the front felt mismatching. The front reminded me of a wave, but the back looked like a little girl's princess dress. Not good. I named the dress a nightmare as I only wanted to wake up from the awful situation with a beautiful dress in my hands.

We met again in another fitting session, where I got the idea to put extra fabric to help cover the back. The idea worked, but it still faced another change at the sewing phase and thus, a sleeve was born. The amazing thing about this dress is that it doesn't have a zipper and it still doesn't fall and in addition, fits well at least in the front.

This dress is a sweet victory for me. August is done and I'm already looking forward to the future. September has begun much better and now this dream feels like a dream again.

During this month I've once again realized that I have lots of good old and new friends that have helped me pull through this mess. Thank you for existing! Helping out a friend hasn't gone exctinct from this world after all!

Elokuu alkoi ja palasimme lomalta takaisin kotiin. Oikeasti kerrankin loma, jossa unohdin jopa mikä päivä oli tai paljonko kello. Ihana ihana LOMA! Ehkä juuri tämän vuoksi kotiin palattuani arki iski päin naamaa ja lujaa. Rakas mieheni otti ja palasi töihin. Oli aika jatkaa hommia unelmani parissa.

Tuijotin koko ensimmäisen viikon pöydällä lojuvaa Brother-ompelukonettani ja käänsin pääni pois. Motivaationi oli todellakin hukassa. Lomalla syntyneet hauskat ideat odottivat toteuttamistaan, mutta aloittaminen tuntui ylitse pääsemättömän vaikealta. Jatkoimme tuijotusta aina iltaisin kunnes..

Paniikki iski. Elokuu lähestyi puoliväliä, ja en ollut tehnyt oikeastaan mitään järkevää elokuun mekon suhteen. Ryhdistäydyin, soitin mallille ja sovimme ensimmäiset sovitukset. Marssin kohti kangaskauppaa. Olin päättänyt valmistaa punaisen mekon. Idea punaiseen mekkoon oli syntynyt elokuusta, koulujen alkamisesta ja ystäväni kommentista: ”jokaisella naisella pitäisi olla ainakin yksi punainen mekko”. Leikittelin ajatuksella punahilkasta, jossa yhdistyisi koulumaailma ja punainen mekko. 

Ongelmat jatkuivat kangaskaupassa. En löytänyt oikein hyvää kangasta, josta olisin voinut lähteä toteuttamaan ideaani. Ostin kuitenkin punaisen puuvillakankaan, joka osoittautui kotona todella surkeaksi valinnaksi. Kangas rypistyi koko ajan ja sen väri muistutti tietyssä valossa lähinnä oranssia. No...

Leikkasin kuitenkin ”punaisesta” kankaasta yläosan fiilispohjalta, ja tein siihen mielestäni hauskoja taitoksia. Päätin ommella yläosan jotenkin kiinni, jotta meillä olisi ekoihin sovituksiin jo jotain ”valmista”. HUONO IDEA!!! Mekon yläosasta tuli vahingossa niin pieni, ettei mallini olisi mahtunut mitenkään siihen. Sinällään melkoisen tuttu tilanne suoraan maaliskuulta...

Tässä vaiheessa vihasin kangasta jo niin paljon, että luovutin ja päätin muuttaa koko elokuun mekon teemaa. Mielestäni tämä oli ihan hyvä idea, sillä Punahilkkoja tuntui olevan valmiiksi joka paikassa. Elokuussa elokuviin oli tullut Red riding hood -leffa ja Sarah Jessica Parker asteli I don`t know how she does it -elokuvansa ensi-illassa ”punahilkka”-tyyppinen mekko päällään. Kangas odottaa nyt kaapissa pienempää mallia (lasta) ja uutta inspiraatiota.

Olin siis pisteessä nolla ja oli ehkä elokuun 19. päivä. Mietin mistä itse pidän elokuussa, ja päällimmäiseksi nousivat seuraavat asiat: elokuun viilenevät illat, auringonlaskut, puistot, järven ranta ja tähtitaivas. Siinä se oli. Uutta kangasta kehiin ja hommiin.

Valmistin kankaasta aluksi valtavan kaavun. Tällä kertaa mallini mahtuisi varmasti mekkoon. Kieltämättä mekkoon olisi mahtunut vaikka kaksi mallia. Sen verran tilavan mekon alun vein ensimmäisiin sovituksiin. Nauroimmekin mallini kanssa, että pitäisikö tästä tehdä raskausmekko.

Sovituksissa tein mallin päälle suoraan muutamia taitoksia ja laskoksia.

Mekko pyöri ja pyöri ompelupöydälläni (keittiönpöytä) enkä oikein löytänyt punaista lankaa. Mekon etu- ja takaosa olivat kuin eri paria. Etupuolesta mieleen tuli aalto, mutta takaosa muistutti ihan pikkutytön prinsessamekkoa. Ei niin hyvä juttu. Nimesin mekon painajaisuneksi, sillä halusin vaan herätä siitä kauheasta tilanteesta kaunis mekko käsissäni.

Tapasimme vielä toisissa sovituksissa, jossa sain idean laittaa mekkoon ekstrakangasta, jolla voisin ”peittää” selkäpuolta. Idea toimi, mutta se koki vielä ompeluvaiheessa yhden muutoksen, ja näin syntyi hiha. Tässä mekossa ihmeellistä on se, ettei siinä ole vetoketjua. Se pysyy silti hyvin päällä, ja istuu hyvin ainakin edestä.

Tämä mekko on minulle ”työvoitto”. Syyskuun puolelle venynyt elokuun mekko on nyt vihdoinkin paketissa, ja nyt katseet on siirretty jo kohti tulevaa. Unelma tuntuu taas unelmalta. 

Tämän kuukauden aikana olen tajunnut jälleen kerran, että mulla on paljon hyviä vanhoja ja uusia ystäviä, joiden avulla olen selvinnyt tästäkin suosta. Kiitos että ootte olemassa! Auttaminen ei ole kadonnut tästä maailmasta kokonaan! 

Jenni, kiitos kun järkkäsit mulle ihanan Doritin kuvaamaan tätä mekkoa. Dorit, olet aivan uskomattoman ihastuttava ihminen. Olen myyty. (Dorit on valokuvaaja, joka kirjoittaa myös Paikka auringossa -blogia). Mallini Erica, sulla on mieletön kyky saada ihmiset uskomaan omiin kykyihinsä. Elokuu nollattu, kiitos Erica.
