Back in business
First let me defend myself a bit. The dress of February may not be a dress in everyone’s opinion, but hopefully the story of the dress will shed some light on the issue. Secondly, this is my dream and I get to do exactly those kinds of dresses I feel like doing. Any objections?
In January we avoided alcohol and now’s a good time to get back to work all refreshed. The theme of February’s dress is businesswoman.
Success, fast results, money and burnout: the keys to a happy life? In business life you have to make yourself indispensable so that you won’t be replaced with another employee. It feels as though only the bravest are able to question that kind of lifestyle and slow their lives down.
I’ve been away from work for a year now, and I really can tell the difference. NB: I am NOT saying that I’m being brave, as I’ve in fact been away just because of a trip abroad last spring and my child. I’ve just had a lot of time to think about work and life in general; especially the part work plays in people’s lives.
When designing the dress, I thought a lot about what a successful businesswoman gets from her job and what does she have to give up in return? How should a businesswoman dress? What if she didn’t dress as supposed? However, I decided to make a practical dress that would be suitable for everyday use, but could then be turned into a cocktail one by changing something.
Now after two completed dresses I am pretty sure that every dress will go through some changes from the original plans in the real execution phase. Both times the changes have turned out to be better than the original ideas. At least in my opinion.
The original idea of February’s businesswoman dress went through some drastic changes already in the first fitting session. This shoulder-strap dress was supposed to have big pockets and a baggy hem. Exceptional but nonetheless “acceptable” in the business world. Thanks to my talking model, things didn’t go as planned, which was for the better. Instead of a baggy skirt she suggested a secretarial skirt (the official name of which is apparently pencil skirt, I hear).

Here’s a fast sketch of the original idea for the dress. NB! I drew this afterwards, as I rarely draw my ideas down. Instead they more or less live in my head and change constantly. I’m a pretty lousy drawer, but I won a drawing competition held by a bank while in elementary school. To this day, I can still brag about that. |
With the changes came the thought of how handy it would be if you could add something spectacular to a classic pencil skirt. The showy part should be easily attachable and removable. The idea of a butt thingie came in the fitting phase.
Butt, ass, bum, derriere, tooshie – to hide or not to hide? Usually in parties and social occasions people move, dance and sometimes even crawl. In romantic movies one turns to see the other leave and people give each other meaningful looks. In bars women and occasionally men, too, are the victims of ass groping. Wouldn’t it be fun if there would be something else interesting to look and feel at the back than just the backside? Or if you don’t have enough bum, with this dress you could loan some extra.
How’s your rear doing? Oh man with the butt thingie and making it. I first planned to use a lot of tulle and the same fabric as in the skirt. The fabric was however so heavy that it would’ve been difficult to get the bum to be gorgeously voluminous with that. So, I used the fabric of the skirt only with the inner parts of the rose, and otherwise I used thin chiffon in the lining of the rear. Shiny tulle was also used in the rear, you can find it in the shoulder-straps as well. The sewing of the rear was quite challenging, as in the end it wouldn’t fit under the foot of the sewing machine. Hence I had to sew a lot by hand.
How is the rear attached? There are buttons inside the skirt and see-through snap fasteners at the back of the skirt and at the butt thingie. The rear is quite heavy, but while wearing it doesn’t apparently feel that weighty. Sitting is more comfortable, too – you’ll have your own cushion with you, wherever you go J
There’s nothing much more to tell about the skirt, except: LINING, I hate you even more than sewing zippers! I sewed my second lining in my life and I hope I never have to sew a third one. Although I know that when following my dream, I probably have to make a lot of those in the future. A deep sigh.
This time the shoulder-straps were the most problematic area. I tested at least three different kinds of strap alternatives. Finally I ended up with tulle straps, they were light enough to accompany the heavy rear. In addition, I crafted the rose brooch by hand: it keeps the straps well in place. It was not until the photo shoots, when we realized that the rose is once again an adjustable one, you can wear it for instance as a bracelet, too.
About the photo shoots: Risto the photographer took our photos, this time at ArtShortCut gallery in Helsinki (Malminkatu 36, 00100). The place was perfect for the photo shoots, and the art of Duncan Juvonen there was like a part of the story of my dress. I highly recommend a visit to the gallery. My dream coming true is only 10 dresses away. The dress of March is soon ready and waiting for the photo shoots. I just realized that I’ve actually returned to work. Now I just work for accomplishing my dream.

Back in bisnes!
Ensiksi pidän pienen puolustuspuheen. Helmikuun mekko ei välttämättä ole kaikkien mielestä mekko, mutta toivottavasti mekon teema ja tarina selittävät asian. Toiseksi tämä on minun unelmani ja saan tehdä just sellaiset 12 mekkoa kuin haluan. Vastalauseita?
Tammikuussa vietettiin tipatonta, ja nyt onkin sitten mukava palata raikkaana takaisin työn pariin. Helmikuun mekon teemana on siis bisneswoman.
Menestyminen, kovat tulokset, raha ja burnout näistäkö löytyy avaimet onnelliseen elämään? Työelämässä pitää tehdä itsestä korvaamaton, ettei sua korvata toisella työntekijällä. Tuntuu että vain rohkeimmat uskaltavat kyseenalaistaa tällaisen ajattelutavan. Vain rohkeimmat uskaltavat hidastaa omaa elämäänsä, ja alkaa elämään enemmän sitä virastoajan jälkeistä elämää.
Olen ollut vuoden poissa töistä, ja sen kyllä huomaa. Huom! En nyt todellakaan hehkuta itse olevani rohkea, sillä olen oikeastaan ollut poissa töistä viime keväisen ulkomaan reissun ja lapseni vuoksi. Olen vaan ehtinyt pohtimaan viimeisen vuoden aikana aika paljon työtä ja elämää yleensä. Erityisesti työnroolia ja merkitystä osana ihmisen elämää.
Mekon ideointi vaiheessa mietin sitä, mitä menestyvä bisneswoman saa työltään, ja mistä hän joutuu luopumaan menestyksen vuoksi? Miten bisneswomanin tulisi pukeutua? Mitä jos ei pukeutuisikaan niin kuin pitäisi? Päätin kuitenkin tehdä arkikäyttöön soveltuvan käytännöllisen mekon, josta saisi jotain muuttamalla sopivan vaikka cocktail-tilaisuuteen.
Nyt kahden valmiin mekon myötä olen melko varma siitä, että jokainen mekkoni tulee muuttumaan alkuperäisestä suunnitelmasta varsinaisessa toteutusvaiheessa. Molemmilla kerroilla muutokset ovat osoittautuneet paremmiksi kuin alkuperäiset ideat. Ainakin näin omasta mielestäni.
Helmikuun alkuperäinen idea bisneswomanin mekosta koki todella rankan muutoksen heti ensimmäisessä sovituksessa. Tähän henkselimekkoon piti tulla isot taskut ja pussimainen helma. Poikkeuksellinen mutta kuitenkin ”hyväksyttävä” työelämään. Toisin kävi ja hyvä niin. Kiitos puhuvan mallini, joka ehdotti pussimaisenhameen sijaan sihteerihametta (virallinen nimi on kuulemma kynähame).

Tässä pikainen piirros alkuperäisestä mekkoideasta. Huom! Piirsin tämän piirroksen jälkikäteen, sillä piirtelen harvemmin ideoitani paperille. Vaan ne oikeastaan elävät päässäni, ja muuttuvat siellä tauotta. Olen melko surkea piirtäjä, mutta olen voittanut ala-asteella osuuspankin järjestämän piirustuskilpailun, jolla voin rossailla vielä tänäkin päivänä. |
Muutosten myötä aloin miettimään, kuinka kätevää olisi, jos perinteiseen sihteerinhameeseen voisi lisätä jotain näyttävää. Näyttävän jutun pitäisi olla tarpeeksi helposti kiinnitettävissä ja otettavissa pois. Idea perähärpäkkeestä syntyi sovitusvaiheessa.
Perä, takamus, pakarat ja pylly piiloon vai esiin? Yleensä juhlissa ja tilaisuuksissa liikutaan, istutaan, tanssitaan ja joskus jopa konttaillaan. Romanttisissa elokuvissa käännytään katsomaan toisen perään, ja luodaan merkitseviä katseita. Baarissa naiset ja joskus myös miehet joutuvat peräkouraisujen uhreiksi. Eikö olisikin hauskaa, jos siellä perässä olisi joskus jotain muutakin mielenkiintoista katseltavaa ja kosketeltavaa kuin vain se perä? Tai jos ei ole tarpeeksi perää omasta takaa, niin tämän mekon myötä saisi vähän lainaperää.
Kuinka peräsi voi? Voi elämä tuota perää ja sen tekemistä. Ajattelin aluksi käyttää perään paljon tylliä ja samaa kangasta kuin hameessa. Kangas oli kuitenkin niin raskasta, että perää olisi ollut vaikeaa saada sopivan suloisen muhkeaksi. Käytin siis hamekangasta vain tuon ruusun sisuksen tekemiseen, ja muuten vuorasin perän ohuella sifongilla. Perässä on käytetty myös kimaltelevaa tylliä, jota on myös olkaimissa. Perän ompeleminen oli aika haastavaa, sillä loppuvaiheessa se ei meinannut mahtua enää ompelukoneen neulasimen alle. Jouduin siis ompelemaan aika paljon käsin.
Kuinka perä pysyy kiinni? Perä kiinnittyy hameen sisäpuolella olevilla napeilla sekä läpinäkyvillä neppareilla, joita on hameen takaosassa sekä perähärpäkkeessä. Perä on aika painava, mutta päälle se ei kuulemma tunnu niin painavalta. Istuminenkin on kätevää kun on aina oma pehmuste mukana.
Hameesta ei sen kummempaa sanottavaa, kuin että vuoren tekeminen: vihaan sinun tekemistä vielä enemmän kuin vetoketjun ompelua! Ompelin nyt elämäni toisen vuorikankaan, ja toivon ettei minun tarvitse ommella kolmatta. Tiedän kyllä jo nyt, että joudun tekemään vielä monta sellaista tämän unelmani myötä. Huokaus ja syvä sellainen.
Olkaimet tuottivat tällä kertaa eniten päänvaivaa. Testailin varmaan kolmea erilaista olkainvaihtoehtoa. Päädyin kuitenkin tuollaisiin tylliolkaimiin, sillä ne olivat tarpeeksi kevyet raskaan perän rinnalle. Askartelin vielä käsin tuollaisen rintaruusukkeen, jonka avulla olkaimet pysyvät hyvin kiinni. Huomasimme vasta kuvauksissa, että ruusuke on myös jälleen siirrettävissä, vaikka käsikoruksi.
Kuvauksista. Kuvaaja Risto otti jälleen valokuvat ja tällä kertaa kuvaukset järjestettiin Helsinkiläisessä ArtShortCutin galleriassa (Malminkatu 36, 00100).
